The Civic Chorale is partnering with the Tallahassee Film Society in presenting the cinematic treatment of the Christmas Truce. Joyeux Noel (2005, French, with subtitles) will be presented at the All Saints Cinema, 918½ Railroad Ave at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2014. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 to either members of the Chorale or the Society, $8 for non-members. A special combination ticket to both the film and the concert is available to all for $10.
What was the Christmas truce? On Christmas Eve 1914, the Germans placed candles and makeshift tinsel decorations on Christmas trees around their trenches. The Germans then proceeded to sing Christmas carols. The British troops facing the German trenches began to sing carols as well, continuing throughout the night. Following this, inquisitive excursions were made into No-Mans-Land where small gifts were exchanged. In particular, the artillery in that sector of the front fell silent.
“Joyeux Noel” re-introduced many to this inspiring bit of history, and as we approach the 100th anniversary of the 1914 Christmas truce, the Tallahassee Civic Chorale (in partnership with the Tallahassee Film Society) is proud to present this special screening as we prepare for our upcoming concert which also commemorates this spark of humanity amongst the horrors of war.
Many thanks to the Tallahassee Film Society for partnering with us to make this screening possible and we hope to see you at the cinema!
